The tragedy in Portage Park this month

Dear Neighbor,

This week’s newsletter opens on a very somber note to address the immense tragedy of the loss of Serabi Medina, a young Portage Park resident who was killed the first weekend of August. She was 9 years old and about to start fourth grade at Reinberg Elementary School. She loved the color purple, taking care of her dog, and playing dodgeball.

The loss of her precious, young life is profoundly felt throughout our communities. On Wednesday night, the 39th District office attended a neighbor-led peace march in her honor. Our office sends our deep condolences to the Medina family, and we stand in solidarity and community with our neighbors, committed to building neighborhoods where our children can safely thrive.

As we all grapple with this tragic news and classes begin for Chicago Public School students,  I hope you and your family can find some solace. If there's anything our office can do to support you, please reach out. The 39th District office wishes all a safe, healthy, energizing school year.

All my best,
Alyssa
Chief of Staff
39th District
