Updates on New Arrivals to Chicago 📢

Dear Neighbor,

As you may know, it has been over a year since the first buses of asylum seekers and migrants arrived in Chicago from Texas. Governments at the city, state, and county levels have been working together to coordinate more long-term solutions to secure housing and resources.

As part of that coordinated government response, the City of Chicago’s Department of Family and Support Services has announced the Homeless Services New Arrivals Shelter Operations of City-Owned, City-Leased or Licensed Facilities Request for Proposals #9335. DFSS is looking for applications for the operation of emergency shelters for New Arrivals.

For more information on the RFP and to apply for it online, please take a look at the application posted here. Applications are due on Tuesday, September 26 at 12:00pm.

While the RFP application for shelter is in process, community organizations, faith communities, and mutual aid efforts continue to take on Herculean work to provide basic necessities to new arrivals taking temporary shelter in police districts across the city.

El Árbol Generoso, the 14th District Volunteer Network, the 17th district’s Community Care Collective 33, and neighbors in the 25th police district are volunteer networks providing meals and collecting supplies for asylum seekers. If you have items to donate, you can visit the links above to see updated lists of priority supplies needed.

You can also support new arrivals with donations by visiting Chicago.gov/Support or by purchasing items directly from a regularly updated Amazon Wish List set up in partnership with Instituto del Progreso Latino.

Thank you all again for your ongoing care, support, and solidarity.

Best,
Alyssa
Chief of Staff
39th District
