Celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Dear Neighbor,
I hope you're having a peaceful and restful Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
This year I'm particularly proud to celebrate our landmark "Land Back" legislation, passed in January, which will formally return the Shabbona Lake State Park to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. The Nation has a longstanding legal claim to the land, and once we execute a land management agreement with tribal leadership, the land will be added to the new Prairie Band reservation in central Illinois.
In case you missed it at the time, here are my remarks from the House floor when the bill passed.
Thank you for the honor of allowing me to serve our community, and today I recommit to using that power and privilege to continue fighting for justice — for Indigenous people and for all those who face injustice.
Sincerely,
Will
