Q: What's your name and position at Lula Cafe?

A: Jason Hammel, chef, proprietor.

Q: How long have you been in the neighborhood

A: I have been int he neighborhood 20 years.  But Lula has been here for 16 years!  September 2, 1999 was the first day we opened our doors.

Q: What do you want our community to know about Lula Cafe?

A: That we will always want to grow. That we love our neighborhood and all the amazing creative people we have met over the years.  That we are always on the lookout for progressive and innovative partnerships to make our community a happy place to live.

Q: What’s your favorite summer activity in Chicago?

A: Farmer’s market, Logan Square, Sunday mornings.

Q: What positive attributes does Lula Cafe bring to the community?

A: We employ (and have employed) so many neighborhood youth over the years and have served as a “second home” to many of them as they start their lives in the city.  That tree has deep roots and many of those people have left to do amazing work in Logan Square, particularly in the arts.  We bring to the community the idea that hospitality and great food can engender lifelong relationships and creative endeavors for years to come.

Q: Where did you get your inspiration for Lula Cafe?

A: 16 years ago, I was 28 and risk tolerant.  Had no idea what I was getting myself into.  So I just went for it.  The inspiration was to live for today, to search out to learn what I didn’t know, and to be ecstatic and dreamlike in that search.  I took my inspiration from so many of the amazing writers and musicians and visual artists that enthralled me in my twenties.  Particularly the great music scene around Chicago in the 90s.
